How to spot fake followers and engagement

Five checks you can run on any Instagram account in ten minutes.

Why it matters

Bought followers don't buy products. Paying for an inflated audience means paying for reach that doesn't exist, and fake engagement hides it well enough that many brands never notice.

Five quick checks

Open the account and look for these:

  • Engagement rate far below 1% on an account over 10K followers.
  • Comments that are generic ("Nice pic 🔥") and from accounts with no posts.
  • Sudden follower jumps of thousands in a day with no viral post to explain it.
  • Likes that are high but saves, shares and replies are near zero.
  • An audience mostly in countries the creator never posts about.

Or let someone else do it

Every creator on NexaGuru is checked for account ownership and real engagement by a person before they are listed. That doesn't replace your own judgement, but it removes the obvious fakes before you see them.

Put it into practice.
